When you grow up in Houston's Northside, you learn that there are some fights from which you just can't back down. Now that I have been teaching for nine years, I have decided to take the fight to ensure that all children receive a high quality education to the Houston ISD Board of Trustees.
I am a proud product of public education. Moreover, I am a proud product of neighborhood schools: Janowski and Herrera for elementary school, Burbank for middle school, and Sam Houston for high school. These schools, as well as many like them around Houston, are the true test of our commitment to the American ideal of opportunity for all.
Later, I earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Houston - Downtown, a short drive from where I attended high school, and an even shorter drive from where I teach now.
I know the struggles our students in District 1 face because I was one of those students. I teach them everyday. I go home and help them with their homework. So many of these students have no voice and are neglected by our governing bodies. That is why I am running for this position--to be a voice for the voiceless and to fight for those who can't yet fight for themselves.
